Health and Safety Department

The Saudi Mining Polytechnic (SMP) realizes the importance of safety and gives it utmost attention and care. SMP has obtained membership of the British Council and the ISO 45001 accreditation for Occupational Health and Safety System as well as the ISO 9001 accreditation for Quality Management System. SMP is also an authorized training provider for OSHA.

Safety has main pillars according to ISO standards, including field, leadership, planning, maintenance, operations and improvement. There is no doubt that the efforts exerted by SMP in the field of safety have improved the level of safety awareness in the institute on the Hudson scale of safety culture from the first level to the fourth level, which in turn contributed to achieving and enabling occupational safety and health at the institute and to providing a safe and healthy training and work environment.

Among the most important practices applied at SMP are the scheduled training sessions and workshops that take place in the Safety Exhibition, which covers seven areas of safety, including safety equipment in mines and factories, chemical safety, fire safety, driving safety, as well as daily bulletins related to safety. Classes at SMP are scheduled to start with a safety talk for about two minutes. There is also great focus on the field of innovation at the safety level; SMP recorded inventions in the field of safety, namely devices for detecting the efficiency of fire extinguishers and a device for detecting toxic gases in mines. These practices contributed to transferring and applying the trainees’ knowledge in the field of safety to their workplaces, and the impact of this was sought through the annual evaluation of graduates and employees.
